The Investigation of Air Pollution Standing Conference (IAPSC) is a non-statutory consultative body providing a forum for discussion and information exchange, on air pollution and related issues. IAPSC's original role was to help in the co-ordination of collaborative air quality monitoring, and the analysis of data resulting from investigations carried out principally by local and central government. However, since then IAPSC has widened its interest and membership, and now provides an important interface between the various organisations involved in the assessment and control of air pollution, measurement and effects.

IAPSC holds twice-yearly conferences on topical air pollution related issues. These take place in December and June each year. Topics and speakers are decided by the Agenda Committee. Recent topics have included:

  • Air Quality Management in Cities
  • Regional Monitoring Networks and their Role in Air Quality Management
  • Particulate Source Apportionment
  • Air Quality Management Areas and Action Plans
  • Health Implications of Air Pollution
  • Integrating Air Quality into Transport Policy
  • Air Quality Management Issues Relating to Airports
  • European Union and National Developments in Air Quality Policy
  • Particles
Who belongs to IAPSC?

Membership of IAPSC is open to any organisation with an interest in air pollution. UK Local and Unitary Authorities constitute a large proportion of our membership, together with Government Departments, organisations concerned with planning, pollution control and environmental health, public and private industry, universities and colleges, as well as consultants in the field of air pollution.

Who runs IAPSC and how is it financed?

IAPSC is run on behalf of its membership by the elected Agenda Committee. Administrative services for IAPSC are provided by AEA Technology Environment. IAPSC is financed entirely by membership subscriptions.

The Agenda Committee currently comprises the following members:

  • Mr Mark Daly, Sheffield City Council (Chair)
  • Ms Alison Loader, AEA Energy & Environment (Technical Secretary)
  • Dr Tim Chatterton, University of the West of England
  • Ms Gloria Esposito, London Borough of Camden
  • Mr Leon Hibbs, Reigate & Banstead District Council
  • Mr Dave Green, King's College ERG
  • Mr Nigel Jenkins, Lewes District Council
  • Dr Beth Conlan, AEA Energy & Environment
  • Mr Tim Williamson, Defra
  • Mr Redouan Sadak, Portsmouth City Council
  • Mr Brian Anderson, Bradford Metropolitan District Council
Why should I join IAPSC?

Sustained public awareness and concern over the effects of air pollution, the introduction of new sources of pollution and new pollutants, new responsibilities for pollution monitoring and control arising from legislation, all highlight a continuing need for up-to-date and reliable information on air pollution. This is particularly so in today's climate of public concern over environmental issues.

If you need information on air pollution, then you may wish to consider joining IAPSC. This will enable your organisation to be linked to a long established source of sound information and practical expertise on the subject and to a network of bodies involved in this field.

How much does it cost and how can I join?

The annual subscription for IAPSC is £213 + VAT, which covers attendance of 2 delegates at each of the 2 conferences. Alternatively it is possible to book on a "pay per conference" basis, at a price of £100 +VAT per person per conference. Copies of past papers presented at the conference are available to members, free of charge, via this website or on request.
